Meet Curvy Girl Resale Boutique!

Fashionable AND affordable plus size clothes? WHAT?! I know. My mind was kind of blown too.

A few weeks ago I attended the grand opening of Curvy Girl Boutique. Though I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, I knew I was so excited to check out a store that not only was local but carried my size *insert praise hands* (But seriously…this is huge for Frederick, MD) Upon entering this perfectly sized, well decorated boutique, I was warmly welcomed by the owner and shown around the store. As I looked through the racks and racks of insanely cute, affordable, second-hand clothes all ranging from sizes 10-30, I was immediately in love. So much so, that I had to do a post about this incredible store!

Not only do they have an extensive variety of dresses, tops, pants, and jackets, they also have accessories for days. Shoes, jewelry, scarves, etc., if you need it they’ve got it. But what’s incredible about Curvy Girl Boutique (CGB), is the quality of the clothing. There’s brand name options such as Torrid, Fashion to Figure, Lane Bryant & Forever 21 Plus, all for at least a quarter the original price. I don’t know about ya’ll but I get SO tired of paying $50 for one top at some of my favorite plus size stores. I would venture to say that’s why I feel so adamant about CGB, they’re making quality plus clothes accessible, affordable, and fashionable. I mean come on…what more can a woman want??

This versatile and gorgeous royal blue top just so happens to be a resale from Curvy Girl Boutique 😍

I was fortunate enough to collaborate with Owner, Stephanie Vanderhorst, and asked her a bit about herself and Curvy Girl Boutique. Check out the interview below:

My name is Stephanie and I am originally from Clearwater, FL.  I moved to Charlotte, NC in 2008 and shortly thereafter moved to Frederick, MD in 2011.  I am currently a Manager of Loan Originations for a credit union in DC.  I have 4 children, 3 of whom are adults and 4 grand babies.  I love to travel, go to concerts, attend plays, frequent wonderful restaurants, and MOST of all, SHOP.

Tell us a little bit about your experience as a curvy woman.

I have been a curvy woman most of my life. I remember being in middle school and taking shape very early. By the time I was in high school, I was a size 13/14 and continued to blossom from there. As a young mother at the age of 16, I started to gaining weight and by the age of 21 with 3 kids, I was 250lbs (size 20W). As with some women, I was very self-conscious; however, I always maintained a sense of style, even on a budget. In my early 30’s, I really started to embrace my curves. I loved my waist, thighs and backside. I learned to accentuate what God had given me with class and style. I steadily worked out and watched (for the most part) my diet, putting me at a size 10-12. After struggling to stay there for a few years prior to embarking on menopause, I slowly started to climb the scale and clothing size, but this time, I FULLY embraced my body. I felt that I ate well, was active, and was going to start LIVING my life not worrying about what society said I should look like. I inspire ALL women to do the same, it is very liberating.

What does being a confident woman look like to you?

A confident woman is someone who knows her worth and loves every facet of her being. She faces the world every day with her head held high, despite the turmoil that may be brewing in her life.   She is continually on a quest to grow intellectually, emotionally, physically, financially and spiritually. Most of all, she has mastered the understanding of BALANCE in her life and does not neglect herself for anyone.

What prompted you to open Curvy Girl Boutique?

I was inspired to open Curvy Girl by a contemporary of mine that lives in FL. She, like I, is a very curvy woman and ventured out to open her own plus size clothing boutique. The response that she received from the community was overwhelming. I, in turn, wanted to bring that excitement to an area in MD that would appreciate such options. I spent the majority of my life pinching pennies and I understand the financial struggle that we all go through during seasons of our life. Our SELF ESTEEM or SELF CONFIDENCE should never suffer because we don’t have quality, trendy clothing that fits US, at reasonable prices.

Who is Curvy Girl Boutique geared toward?

Curvy Girl is geared toward the women who possess a sense of style and love cutting-edge design. Women who pride themselves on expressing their uniqueness through fashion. What’s better than this? Having the option to change your wardrobe as often as you would like, even while being on a budget.

What can customers look forward to while shopping at Curvy Girl Boutique?

Curvy Girl wants to deliver an EXPERIENCE to each of our customers. When you come into Curvy Girl, you will be welcomed with open arms. We have a very clean and organized environment that fosters a wonderful shopping experience. We want to see women come hang out with their girls, have fun, try on as many items as they wish, accessorize and leave feeling more beautiful than when they first walked in.

Can you tell us about the benefits of shopping both locally and within a consignment capacity?

The benefits of shopping locally are endless. One, you give back to your community by supporting a small business and that small business helps stabilize the economy in that community. Second, shopping locally allows you to touch and feel items before purchasing them. We have to admit, most of us curvy women need to try items on because every designer has a different cut in their clothing. Anyone that is a bargain shopper should love consignment/resale. It gives the shopper best of both worlds. You can find awesome, unique pieces that no one has, as well as quality pieces at affordable prices.

How do you hope Curvy Girl Boutique will impact the Frederick community?

I hope that Curvy Girl Boutique impacts Frederick by providing plus size women clothing options that they haven’t had before. I want to see women explore their creative sides by expressing themselves through fashion. Curvy Girl has thousands of items to choose from and any woman could leave out the store with an entire outfit (shoes and accessories included) for under $50. That’s pretty remarkable.

If women would like to donate clothes to Curvy Girl Boutique, how would they do so?

Curvy Girl Boutique accepts items for resale daily. Those items should be in excellent condition and should be for the two seasons ahead of us. For example in September we are taking clothes for Fall & Winter. We give up to 50% store credit for what we think we can sell it for.

How can customers contact you? (maybe include address, store hours, email, social media sites?)

Curvy Girl Boutique is opened 7 days a week. Currently our hours are Mon-Thurs 12-8pm, Fri-Sat 10-8pm and Sun 11-6pm. We will make modifications to the hours as inclement weather approaches, as well as when Daylight Savings time is over. You can follow us on Facebook at Curvy Girl Plus Size Resale Boutique.
